Actually, he was never excommunicated. In fact, he wanted till he was on his deathbed to publish his work because he was slightly paranoid. In fact, he actually studied canon law (the the internal ecclesiastical law governing the Catholic Church). Lastly, Catholic scholars spoke on his work to the pope and cardinals, and the pope (the only man who has the power to excommunicate people) never considered doing.
p.s. excommunication has nothing to do with damning someone to hell. It is the declaration that a person is no longer a part of the church community.
No, Nicholas Copernicus was not officially excommunicated by the Roman Catholic Church. There were no records or historical evidence of such an event occurring. Copernicus' heliocentric model was initially met with skepticism, but he was not excommunicated for his scientific beliefs during his lifetime.
The Catholic Church did not take any direct action against Nicholas Copernicus after he published his theories. However, his heliocentric model of the universe was met with skepticism by some church officials and was eventually placed on the Index of Forbidden Books until revised in 1758. Despite this, Copernicus himself was not persecuted by the Church during his lifetime.
You have just done that. You could also say "Nicholas Copernicus liked pizza".

Nicholas Copernicus was Polish.
Nicholas Copernicus was a Polish astronomer and founder of the heliocentric ordering of the planets. Nicholas Copernicus never married or had any children.
When Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) attempted to promote the heliocentric theory (that the earth moves around the sun) in the seventeenth century, he was tried by the Inquisition in Rome and found "vehemently suspect of heresy". The sentence imposed did not include excommunication, but he was required to "abjure, curse and detest" those opinions and was placed under house arrest for the term of his life. Only in 1965 did the Catholic Church revoke its condemnation of Galileo.
