Prior to 2010, the world's smallest vertebrate was believed to be a fish found in Southeast Asia, known as Paedocypris progenetica, which averages 7.9 mm for females.

In 2010, a smaller vertebrate was discovered, but it was only described in January 2012. The world's smallest known vertebrate, to date, is now a tiny frog discovered in New Guinea, and known as paedophryne amauensis. This little frog is about the size of a house fly - just 7 mm long.
