because the church believed god put the earth in the centre of the universe and the sun and all other planets orbited around us and didn't want people to become unfaithful of god so they imprisoned him in his own home for blasphemy so that people would not discover the truth about earth being an orbiting planet and not a planet that was orbited by other planets :)

Nicolas Copernicus got into trouble because his heliocentric model of the universe challenged the widely accepted geocentric model endorsed by the Catholic Church. His theory contradicted religious teachings and was seen as a threat to the Church's authority, leading to backlash and criticism from religious authorities.

Copernicus contended that the Earth and all other objects in our solar system revolved around the sun. Popular knowledge at the time was that the entire universe revolved around earth.

He got into trouble because this went directly against the teachings of the church, at the time the church was looked to to provide answers about how the universe worked, and they did not look kindly upon him openly defying their teachings.

Because it went against the teachings of the Catholic Church, which at the time was considered heresy.
