It is easiest to think of powers to be 1 multiplied by the number in question as often as the power's numeric value:

22=1x2x2=4 , 34=1x3x3x3x3=81

Thus any number to the power of 1 (e.g. 91=1x9=9) is the same as the number you were raising to the power of 1
