A ratio is a comparison of one thing to a different thing in order to see how they may be related, or how they are different, or how they generally affect each other. Here are some examples:

If you have five Oranges and three apples, the ratio of oranges to apples is five to three, or 5/3. On the other hand, the ratio of apples to oranges is three to five, or 3/5.

If you have a Corvette that goes 160 miles per hour, and a riding lawnmower that goes five miles per hour, the ratio of the speed of a Corvette to a riding lawnmower is 160 to five, or 160/5. Notice that the ratio, expressed as a fraction, reduces to 32/1. In other words, the Corvette goes thirty-two times as fast as your riding lawnmower.

If you have $1600 in the bank, but a relative has $8000 in the bank, then the ratio of your relative's money to your own is $8000 to $1600. That's the same as 800 to 160, or 400 to 80, or 200 to 40, or 100 to 20, or 50 to 10, or 25 to 5, or 5 to 1. In other words, 5/1.
