  1. You convert the mixed number to an improper fraction ie. 1 and 2/3 converts to 5/3
  2. Then find a common denominator ie. 5/3 and 1/2 could have a common denominator of /6
  3. Next you find out how much you times the denominators by to get the /6 and use that number to times the numerators ie. 3x2=6 so 5x2=10 10/6 and 2x3=6 1x3=3 3/6
  4. Now add these two together as you would normally ie.3/6+10/6= 13/6
  5. Finally you convert it back to a mixed number ie. 13/6 converts to 2 and 1/6!
