In Mathematics there are three types of average: the Mean. Median and Mode.

The Mean average is the first average which people meet and is just called the average at that point.

The mean is the sum of all values in a set divided by the number of values.

For example, the mean of the set {1, 2, 2, 4, 7, 9, 11}:

The sum of the values is 1 + 3 + 4 + 6 + 7 + 9 + 12 = 42.

There are 7 numbers in the set.

Therefore the mean = sum of values ÷ number of values = 42 ÷ 7 = 6.
