This is a strategy which is aimed at increasing mental computation. In other words, this strategy should help students to be able to solve two and even three digit subtraction questions. The best way to understand this strategy is to use a number line.

For example 47 - 28 = this question can be worked out by compensating the 28 to become 30 (by rounding it up, it is easier to work out 47 minus 30) because you rounded the 28 up, you now have to COMPENSATE and then add 2. In otherwords, your new maths question looks like: 47 - 30 + 2 = 19 This can be clearly seen on a number line:
