Rounding a number really just depends on the number and also how much you're wanting to round it to. If you want to round to the nearest 10 for example, you would need to look at the unit (ones) digit. If it is 5 or more, you round the number to the left of it (the tens) up. If it is less than 5, you keep it the same.

Examples of rounding to the nearest 10:

  • 56 is rounded to 60
  • 44 is rounded to 40
  • 88 is rounded to 90
  • 503,334 is rounded to 503,330
  • 144 is rounded to 140

To round to the nearest 0.001, you need to look at the thousandths of the decimal number. Again, applying the same rule as for rounding to the nearest 10, if the number is 5 or more, round the 'hundredth' up and if it is less than 5, keep it the same.

Examples of rounding to the nearest 0.001 (3 decimal places):

  • 678.567569 is rounded to 678.568
  • 7.23456 is rounded to 7.235
  • 0.0005 is rounded to 0.001
  • 24.993215 is rounded to 24.993

If the number is small like 0.00000986, then it is just counted as 0 as it can not be rounded to 3 decimal places.
