If you are going to teach in a scientific field, a mathematics field, or a physical education field, you are going to need some sort of mathematics. Teachers use math in the following ways beginning the night before you show up for school:

  • He knows how many minutes he needs to prepare his family's meal.
  • He knows how to use measuring spoons and cups, adding or subtracting ingredients for the meal.
  • She knows how to grade your homework, giving you the 'right' number in percent form.
  • He knows how to help his kids with math and science homework.
  • She knows how many minutes her kids need for their baths.
  • He knows when the 10:00 o'clock news starts and ends so he can go to bed early.
  • She knows how many hours she needs to sleep and how long it takes to get ready and arrive at work, so she can set the alarm clock correctly.
  • He can be sure his 3 children are ready before bus time with 3 different bus schedules.
  • She knows how to read the markings on the gas gauge so she won't run out of gas. She calculates the price per gallon, knowing how much cash she has in her pocket, so she pumps only what she can afford.
  • He knows how much air to add to a low tire because tires have a maximum air volume.
  • She knows how to keep track of her gas purchases and mileage, so she can figure out how many MPG her car gets.
  • He knows how often he gets paid and how to pay the family's bills.
  • They both know the area needed to park their cars, so even if spaces aren't marked, they can judge how much room each car needs.
  • Entering school, they sign in, knowing how many hours per day they work minus breaks and holidays.
  • In the classroom, both can take roll call of their class and have an accurate count.
  • In Science class, she knows and can teach complex mathematics used for formulas.
  • In Home Economics, he knows how to multiply how many yards a student needs to make a dress. He can work out lengths and widths in inches or millimeters.
  • She uses algebra and geometry in designing her Physical Education classes.
  • He easily teaches slope and vector in geometry, using real world examples to make the class interesting.
  • At lunch, both can add, subtract, and count change--without delaying the lunch line for an hour with trying to count 57 cents.
  • At change of classes, each know how many students should be in class.
  • In music class, he instructs how to count beats so the marching band marches in sync, and play precisely.
  • Both know how to tell time, to let students out for recess.
  • They are smart enough to use examples of the velocity of a softball... the amount of watts a light bulb gives per hour, and how to explain ratios and percents.
  • After school, they meet at the grocery store, and even before the checkout line they have an idea of how much their groceries cost. He used math to calculate how much of a product would go around for 5 people in the family; she knew how much 5 servings of steak cost at X amount per pound.
  • They know how long it takes to travel home and how many miles they each travel to--and from--work each day. They can subtract expenses from their paycheck without over-drawing the checking account.
  • At Tax time, they know how to fill out a Joint Tax Return, subtract and add properly, and incur no fines--and get a refund.
  • He knows when his child is sick how to figure out how much liquid med to give when it says give 3 cc per pound/weight of the child, and the drug is 5 cc per ml, and it is given with a spoon.
  • She knows how many pints of milk make a gallon, because with 3 kids, the milk gets used fast!
  • He counts how much money to mail a box weighing 6.22 ounces when postage is $0.49 cents per ounce. When he gives a twenty-dollar bill, he knows whether he is owed change--or not.
  • At bedtime, teachers can tell their young children "stories" of Word Problems... If 3 girls and one boy hiked 1/2 mile, and were joined by 4 boys and 2 girls who each walked one mile, before they headed back home, how many boys and how many girls walked at least 1 mile... how many walked two miles...
  • As the adults get ready for bed, they talk about replacing the carpet in the upstairs hallway. She wants the bedroom re-carpeted too. They know the hallway is 38.9 inches wide by 18.65 inches long. The bedroom is 15-feet by 20-feet. They know price of the carpet is $15.90 per square foot. They can figure out how to find the 2 areas and add them together, then multiply the area by the price. They know it will cost nearly half that price for padding... So they combine the 2 prices to judge how much money they need for the carpet and padding.
  • They set their alarm, knowing they must make it to work on time... while numbers and formulas fill their dreams...

Math is used primarily to measure distance, speed and velocity, time, and strength. She/he must know it to teach it to you, and because she/he is good at it you will be good at it, too!
