Let the first even number = 2x. Then the preceding even number is 2x-2.
(2x)/(2x-2) = 1.1
2x = 2.2x - 2.2
2x + 2.2 = 2.2x
2.2 = 0.2x
1.1 = 0.1 x
x = 11
2x = 22
The first even number is 22.
The preceding even number is 20.
22/20 = 1.1 yay!
Since the question has some potential ambiguity in the wording, I offer an alternate interpretation to show why the answer above must be the correct interpretation. Perhaps it mean an even number is divided by the number preceding it.
For example, if the number is 20, the one preceding it is 19 and of course not even.
In this case the problem is (2x)/(2x-1) =1.1
2x=(2x-1)(1.1)
2x=2.2x -1.1
-.2x=-1.1
x=1.1/.2
or 11/2
but then 2x =11 and this is not even so this interpretation does not work.
So the first answer is the only interpretation that gives a valid answer.
If fact I did not even need to do the algebra. An even number divided by an even number results in an odd number and an even number divided by an odd number results in a an even number. This would be used immediately to see which interpretation is correct. It only requires a little multiplication of the number by 10's so see that.
When we say that a number is divisible by five , we mean that : 1.The number when divided by five has a quotient in whole number , and 2.No remainder if left after the division. Since 2 divided by five results in the quotient as 0.4 (which is not a whole number), we say that 2 is not divisible by five . (Even though the remainder becomes zero , if we carry on the division after putting the decimal sign in the quotient.)
Odd numbers do NOT have a factor of 2. When an Even number is divided by an Odd number with no remainder, the prime factors of the divisor cancel out the prime factors of the dividend, but there will be no prime 2 to cancel the prime factor of 2 in the dividend leaving the the quotient to have a factor of 2, and so will be Even. --------------------------------------------------------- Alternatively, consider what happens when you multiply Odd and Even numbers: Odd × Odd = Odd Odd × Even = Even Even × Even = Even The result is Even ONLY if at least one of the numbers multiplied together is Even. Thus if you divide an Even number by an Odd number, the result must be Even. Also consider that Odd times Odd is Odd. Multiplication is the inverse of division, so if you have: dividend ÷ divisor = quotient then dividend = quotient × divisor Now, if the divisor is Odd and the quotient is Odd, the the Dividend MUST be Odd (since Odd × Odd = Odd). Thus if the Dividend is Even and the Divisor is Odd, then the Quotient must be Even.
Quotient.
75 ends (least significant digit) in 5 which is an odd number, hence the entire number 75 is odd. Also if you divide 75 by 2 you get a quotient of 37 and a remainder of 1. When a number is divided by 2 and you do not get a remainder of 0, the number is odd, otherwise it is even.
An even number can be divided by 2 evenly. An odd number will have a remainder of 1 when divided by 2. 102 is an even number.
no ex: 30 divided by 2 = 15(not even)
An even number can be divided by 2 evenly. An odd number will have a remainder of 1 when divided by 2. 33.333333 is neither.

Not necessarily.
yes say you have 5 divided by 2 you get 2.5 or even 5 divided by 7 you get 0.714257142857 which is still rational.

10000This is an even number, and the number immediately preceding it is 9999, which has only four digits.Hence it is the smallest 5-digit even number.Note that here we're not considering negative numbers. If we consider negative numbers, then the smallest 5-digit even number would be -99998.The number immediately preceding it is -99999, which is not even, and the number immediately preceding that is -100000, which has six digits.
