A rational number is one that can be represented as the ratio of two numbers - in other words, it can be written as a fraction. Note that integers (whole numbers) are rational numbers as they can be shown with a denominator of one. For example, 5 = 5/1 : 29 = 29/1.

Any decimal number that terminates is a rational number : 0.28764 = 28764/100000 which can be "simplified" to 7191/25000.
