In mathematics, zero is considered to be unsigned, in that it isn't positive or negative.

On the other hand, in computing there is signed zero, which is positive by default, and sometimes negative as well. This is standardized by IEEE 754-2008.

However, the sign bit and the mathematical positivity of zero are two different things and therefore they must be treated separately.
