Nine cooks working together finish 1/4 of the job in an hour. Each cook finishes 1/(9 x 4) = 1/36 of the job in an hour. Six cooks finish 6/36 = 1/6 of the job in an hour. 1 whole job = 6/6, so it takes the group 6 hours to do the job. ========================================= Another approach: 9 cooks take 4 hours. The time required is inversely proportional to the size of the crew ... for example, double the original crew ==> half the time. 6 cooks = 6/9 = 2/3 of the original crew ==> time required is 3/2 of the original 4 hrs = 6 hours.
