The bottom number of a fraction is called the denominator and tells you into how many parts the whole has been divided. For example in 1/4, the denominator is 4 and tells you that there are 4 parts into which the whole has been divided.

The top number is called the numerator and tells you how many parts (of the bottom number) there are. For example in 3/4 the numerator is 3 and tells you that there are 3 of the 4 parts into which the whole has been divided.
