Let's call the lendth x and the width y x = 2y + 3 xy = 77 That is what is know in the trade as a simulataneous equation Because we have an x on its own lets substitute that equation into the second. (2y + 3)y = 77
2y2 + 3y = 77 2y2 + 3y -77 = 0 (2y - 11)(y + 7) = 0 y = 5.5 or -7 You don't get recangles with negative lengths so:
y = 5.5 We can then substitute that into one of the equaitons to find x x = 2y + 3 x = 2*5.5 + 3 x = 14 So the length is 14 and the width is 5.5
