x = number of motorcycles

y = number of cars

x + y = 39 (total number of motorcycles & cars)

2x + 4y = 138 (total number of wheels; motorcycles -2 , cars -4)

You need to solve these 2 equations together, I used the elimination method:

multiply the 1st equation by 4 and subtract the 2nd equation from it:

4*(x+y=39) --> 4x + 4y = 156

2x + 4y = 138

--------------------------------------------

2x = 18

x = 9

Substitute x=9 into 1st equation & solve for y to find the number of cars, in this case it will be 30 cars.
