They are called unlike fractions. To add or subtract them, you have to change them to forms that have the same denominator.

Example: Add 1/3 and 3/4

1/3 x 4/4 = 4/12 equivalent fraction

1/4 x 3/3 = 3/12 equivalent fraction

4/12 + 3/12 = 7/12 and that is your answer

1/3 + 1/4 = 7/12
