Any length can be measured in millimetres, although it would be silly to measure the distance to the moon in millimetres!

The lengths of insects, leaves may be measured in mm. But mm are also used, for accuracy, in measuring up units for fitted kitchens, wardrobes and so on.

The preferred units in SI are the metre and millimetre. The centimetre is often used in shopping, clothes sizes and the like, but other than the cubic centimetre (cc) used in chemistry, not in science and engineering.
