Let's say that you have 24 Prunes. You would like to "divide" or separate them into separate piles of 3 prunes, each. So in math, you divide the number of prunes by the number of prunes in each pile, or 24/3 = 8 piles.

Or . . . let's say you want to divide your 24 prunes into pile of 8 prunes, each. In math, you divide the number of prunes by the number of prunes in each pile, or 24/8 = 3 piles.

If you want 6 prunes per pile, it is 24/6 = 4 prunes per pile.

That's dividing.
