Example: You're splitting a hamburger with a friend, so you each get half: 1/2
Then another guy sits down and wants some fries, so you each get a third: 1/3
Finally your girlfriend joins you and you all share your piece of pie, so you each a fourth: 1/4
In this case, the denominator is the number of people eating, and the more people eating, the less food you get to eat (the fraction).
