Math is done the same, line it up and add. Except you must carry the 4 instead of the 10. So the first column is easy 1 + 1 is 2. Next 2+3 = 5. Being base 4 though you cant have a five so you carry the 4 (add 1 to the next column) and you leave the extra 1 in the 4's place. Next you have 2+1+1=4 in the third column. Once again you carry the 4 as a 1 to the next column, and have 0 left over. Lastly you have the carried 1.

This means the answer is 1012.


You can check with decimal. 221= 41 (2*16+2*4+1*1) and 131= 29 (1*16+3*4+1*1).
41+79=70


Convert to base four and you get 1012! (1*64+0*16+1*4+2*1=70)
