Pythagoras was famous for the measurement of the lengths of a right angled triangle.

The Pythagorean Eq'n is h^(2) = a^(2) + b^(2)

Where 'h' is the hypotenuse ; the side opposite to the right angle. , and 'a' & 'b' are the two shorter sides adjacent to the right angle.

MN The eq'n is only good for right-angled triangles on a plane surface. Right-angled triangles on a spherical (3-dimensional) surface do not obey this rule.
