Eight and 11 twentieths.

You can do this a couple of ways.

  • Convert everything to improper fractions, then find a common denominator and add, then simplify and convert back to mixed number.
  • Or you can leave as mixed numbers, find common denominators, then add the whole numbers, and add the fractions, then if improper 'carry over' to the whole number so that you have a propermixed number.
  • Or with fractions like these, convert to decimal, add, then convert to appropriate fraction/mixed number.

I like the second or third method myself: 5 3/4 + 2 4/5. Common denominator is 20, so 5 15/20 + 2 16/20 = (5+2) + (15/20 + 16/20) = 7 + 31/20 = 7 + 1 + 11/20 = 8 11/20. Or 5.75 + 2.80 = 8.55 = 8 55/100 = 8 11/20.
