This is related to behavioral theory.

The negative contrast effect is evident when a particular behaviour is reinforced through a reward. When the reward is reduced or withdrawn the behaviour diminishes or ceases. The theory is that a person will view an action as being without value unless there is a reward, and fail to see its importance e.g. brushing teeth or reading. Therefore, a person should not be rewarded for doing something which is beneficial in itself.

The positive contrast effect is when a reward is increased, the person shows an even greater frequency of the behaviuor than those persons who had been rewarded with the higher amount all along.

It depends. (a) a positive minus a smaller positive is positive, (b) a positive minus a positive of the same size is zero, and (c) a positive minus a bigger positive is negative. For example, (a) 8 - 6 = 2 (b) 8 - 8 = 0 (c) 8 - 11 = -3
