I always hated these questions in Algebra. But they're pretty simple, if you can make the two parts more equal. Since Twelfths and Fourths are different, you have to get them to be the same. It's easier to convert 4ths to 12ths, since Four Goes Into 12 Three times - so ONE FOURTH is the same as THREE TWELFTHS, right? That's the tricky part, right there - being able to see the relationship between FOURTHs and TWELFTHs.

So 7/12ths plus 3/12ths is 10/12ths, right? Which is the same as 5/6ths. The first answerer didn't tell you HOW he got the answer, so you were no better off in case it came up again.
