If thedenominator (I'll use D to stand for it) is the same in each fraction you will just have to add the numerator (I'll use N to stand for that) together. If the N is larger than the D after you add (as an example I'll use 12/10) you will put a one (1) down on your sheet of paper (or other writing or typing tool), and put the number of extra pieces than the one whole down next to it so it looks like (1 2/10). If there were double the amount of numbers in the N than the D (21/10) you would write a two (2) down and, again, put the number of extra pieces down next to it (2 1/10). Words to know: 1. Denominator- The bottom number in a fraction that tells you how many total pieces are in the fraction. 2. Numerator- The top number in a fraction that tells you how many parts are shaded or colored in the fraction. If the denominators are different in each fraction, it becomes pre-algebra. Hope this helps. Happy summer!

What is the definition of Adding and Subtracting Like Fractions
adding fractions
For adding or substracting fractions first of all we should calculate the LCM( Lowest Common Multiplier) of the denominators in both of the fractions.
When adding or subtracting fractions first make sure that the denominators are the same if they aren't then find the lowest common denominator and alter the fractions accordingly
They have to have a common denominator
