They are different.

100 sq metres is the area of a square of sides 10m or a rectangle of 20m x 5m or any random shape with an equivalent area: 100 sq metres.

On the other hand, a 100 metre square is a square of sides 100m which would have an area of 10000 sq m (100 times as large).
