The word "difference" indicates subtraction. So you are going to subtract . . .

5 - (-9) = 5 + 9 = 14. This means that 14 is the difference between 5 and -9.

You could also use a number line to determine this answer . . .

-9, -8, -7, -6, -5, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Moving forward on the line from -9 to -8, you count 1 and continue counting to 5. You should have 14! (Yes, I know there are 15 numbers written down, but you are moving FROM one to the next, not counting each individual one. You just want to move forward FROM -9 to 5 on the line. That's 14 moves forward!)
