Depending upon your application, rolls of sod come in a number of sizes. Sod can be harvested in small square slabs, rolled rectangles, or large 4-foot wide rolls. 10 square foot rolls, called "Little Rolls", are 24 inches wide by 5 feet long and comes 50 rolls to a pallet, or 500 square feet (sf) per pallet. The sod height is approximately 2" thick with 1 ½" of blade and ½ - ¾" of root base. Each roll weighs about 35 pounds. These rolls are best for the small to average sized yard. 210 square foot rolls, called "Big Rolls", are 24 inches wide by 105 feet long and will weigh about 900 pounds. We have for rent a sod installation machine for the big rolls. These rolls are best for large yards Sod blocks, used in pioneer earthen homes were 2 feet by 1 foot by 6 inches thick. Footnote: British people call it turf. Sod has a negative personal meaning.

How many rolls of grass needed for 900 sqft?

That depends upon the length and width of each roll. Ask your sod supplier for the length and width of each roll multiply those two dimensions in feet together to get square feet of each roll. For example, if each roll is 3 feet wide by 20 feet long, then multiply those two dimensions to get 60 square feet per roll. Divide the total of 900 square feet by 60 square feet per roll to get 15 rolls.
