Speed equals distance over time as in whatever the distance in the problem is, you divide it with the time in the problem. For example...bob ran 20 miles in 4 hours. What is his speed? So you get 20 over 4. 20 divided by four is 5 so his speed was 5 miles per hour. 5m/hr. speed = distance/time

Basically, average speed is a measure of the total distance covered per unit of time. It is important to remember that speed is a scalar so, for example, changes in position in opposite directions do not cancel out. If I walk 10 metres North and then 10 metres South then I am back where I started. Therefore my overall displacement vector is zero, and to velocity you should use the displacement vector = 0. However, to calculate speed you would need to use the total distance covered, which is 20 metres.

So, the basic formula isspeed = total distance covered/total time taken.

The instantaneous measure of speed is the derivative of displacement (with respect to time).

speed = d/dt(displacement).

There are very many formulae, depending on what information is available.
