Interesting question. If you say 5X3 are you saying that a set of 5 things is added together 3 times (5+5+5) or a set of 3 things is added together 5 times (3+3+3+3+3)? By convention, the first number (multiplicand) is the size of the set and the second number (multiplier) is the times the set is repeated. So, 5X3 means 5 things added together 3 times (5+5+5).
