For a number to be a perfect cube all powers of the primes in its prime factorisation must be a multiple of 3.

Thus the smallest number to multiply a number by to get a perfect cube is the extra prime powers needed.

300 = 2² × 3¹ × 5²

→ need an extra

  • 2 to the power of 3 - 2 = 1, ie 2¹
  • 3 to the power of 3 - 1 = 2, ie 3²
  • 5 to the power of 3 - 2 = 1, ie 5¹
→ the smallest whole number to multiply 300 by to get a perfect cube is 2¹ × 3² × 5¹ = 90.
