Equation: -5x2 + 600x + 100 = 0

Note: In this problem, 1/2 represents the square root, not the 0.5 fraction.

  1. To make life easy, factor and divide 5 out from both sides.

    5 ( -x2 + 120x + 20 ) = 0/5

    -x2 + 120x + 20 = 0

  2. There are different ways to solve a quadratic equation. In this case, the simplest way is by the quadratic formula: x = [ -b ± ( b2 - 4ac)1/2] / 2a

    Since, a = -1, b = 120, and c = 20,

    x = { -120 ± [ (-120)2 - 4(-1)20]1/2} / 2(-1)

  3. Now, solve for x.

    x = [ -120 ± ( 14400 + 80 )1/2] / -2

    x = [ -120 ± ( 14480)1/2] / -2

  4. The square root of 14480 is an irrational number, so you pretty much have your answer, unless if your teacher wants you to write it in a certain way. If your teacher doesn't tell you, you might want to ask.

    x = ( 120 ± 144801/2 ) / 2

    x = ( 60 ± 1/2(14480)1/2 )
