It is very difficult to distinguish between the verbal expression for 3x2 and (3x)2.

Three times (a number multiplied by itself) is 3x2

whereas

(three times a number) multiplied by itself is (3x2)

In both cases the verbal expression is the same. The situation gets worse when you include the last term.

Three times a number multiplied by itself reduced by 6 could mean any one of the following:

Three times (a number multiplied by (itself reduced by 6)) = 3*x*(x-6)

Three times ((a number multiplied by itself) reduced by 6) = 3*(x2 - 6)

Three times (a number multiplied by itself) reduced by 6 = 3*x2 - 6

(Three times a number) (multiplied by itself) reduced by 6 = 3x*3x - 6 = (3x)2 - 6

(Three times a number) (multiplied by itself reduced by 6 = 3x*(3x - 6)

I am sure there are more. This is why brackets are so important in writing expressions unambiguously.
