Johnny LOVES apples. He has 3 apples, and wants twice that amount, meaning he wants 3 more. He goes to the market and buys 3 apples. 3 + 3 = 6, therefore 3 * 2 = 6.

Now Bobby is a picky eater. He doesn't want any apples! He starts out, like Johnny, with 3, but he wants to give them away. In other words, he wants to have those apples 0 times, which IN OTHER WORDS means he wants 3 * 0 apples, which means 0.

Hope this clears it up! :)
