Well they are rectangular rather than square. The reactangular lead means there is a thinner and thicker edge available for marking, and because it is a big lead it has plenty of strength for writing on rough surfaces, etc. The body of the pencil is generally rectangular so that it won't roll when placed on an uneven surface, won't blow around outside in the wind, etc.
