Not being a psychologist, I would venture some layman"s opinion. Boys tend to be happy go lucky- resilient, Bouncy( in the psychological sense of the term) and prolonged depression- as you describe, is somewhat rare. obviously some sort of crisis, internal ( family, school, other) or perhap external- maybe he has been abused. All sorts of behavior anomalies have been linked to child abuse and molestation. a sudden acquisition of an obscene vocabulary or barrage of dirty jokes or inuendoes- though there are songs on the radio which are obscene, such as ( Face Down) which is not about card playing! If he is crying all the time- something is very, very wrong. get help.

Another answer:

Crying is not a problem; it is usually a symptom.

The first thing I would do is take him to see a physician. He could be suffering from physical pain. I would want that ruled out. My son was crying constantly. He was walking around with a broken bone. He was in pain. A shot and a cast cured him.

I would check for bullying. He may have been taught not to tattle. That is nonsense.
