Lots of the other letters of the alphabet are used for either constant numbers or variables that are based on certain formula.
C for instance is the speed of light in a vacuum (a constant)
m is normally used for mass (a variable).
x and y were most likely used as they were letters least likely to be used for representation of anything else and so the idea stuck to use them as calculable variables.
Hope this helps.

Two variables, x and y are in inverse variation if x*y = c for some constant c. The equation can be written in the form y = c/x.
It is a linear equation in the two variables x and y. A single linear equation in two variables cannot be solved for a unique pair of values of x and y. The equation is that of a straight line and any point on the line satisfies the equation.
4x + 2y = 30 Since there are two variables ('x' and 'y'), two independent equations are needed in order to find unique values for both variables. With only one equation, there are millions of sets of values for 'x' and 'y' that satisfy it. For example: x = 4 and y = 7 satisfies it, and so does x = 6 and y = 3.
Suppose the two variables are denoted by X and Y. If Y is a constant multiple of X, that is Y = c*X, then the variation is direct. If the value of X*Y is a constant, that is Y = c/X, then the variation in inverse.
The joint probability function for two variables is a probability function whose domain is a subset of two dimensional space. The joint probability function for discrete random variables X and Y is given aspr(x, y) = pr(X = x and Y = y). If X and Y are independent random variables then this will equal pr(X =x)*pr(Y = y).For continuous variables, the joint funtion is defined analogously:f(x, y) = pr(X < x and Y < y).

Given two variables, X and Y, the rate of X relative to Y is X/Y.

Variables are symbols that replace unknown numbers. Variables are often letters. For example: 5*x=10 7*6=y Here "x" and "y" are the variables.
Two variables, X and Y, are in inverse relation if X*Y = a constant.
It is a term involving two variables, x and y.
x and y
usually x and y
If an equation has two variables, we'll call them (x,y), the variables can be any value as long as both sides of the equation have the same result. If the equation was x = y, then the variables could be (1,1), (2,2), (3,3),etc...
Infinitely many. Assuming the variables are "x" and "y" , for every value of "x" a value for "y" can be calculated.
