because a fraction usually is less than a value of 1. unless of course, its an improper fraction.

Example: 7/10 is equal to .70 which is less than 1

1/1 is equal to 1.0

therfore, the fraction is smaller than the value of 1

o for heavens sake -

you have one whole thing and you are cutting it up into smaller pieces therefore you have more pieces....and the answer looks bigger - ie you have one whole dollar and you divide it by 1/10 (dimes) now you have 10 dimes
