-x + 2y - 20

On its own this is just a mathematical expression involving two unknowns (x and y).

Make it equal to a value (say zero) and it becomes an equation.

-x + 2y - 20 = 0

After rearranging to make y the subject we have :-

2y = x + 20 . . . which we can amend to show a single y as the subject.

y = ½x + 10.

This represents the equation for a straight line that passes through the points (-20, 0) and (0, 10).
