A composite number has factors other than 1 and itself. A prime number has factors of 1 and itself only.

Examples:

4 is a composite number. Its factors are 1, 2, 4.

23 is a Prime number. It has no other factors aside for 1 and 23.

A prime number has only 2 factors which are 1 and itself. Composite numbers are everything else except 1, 2, and 0. 1, 2, and 0 have a different name.
