There are two places "degree' is used in math:

In geometry, it is 1/360 of a complete rotation (circle)

In algebra, it refers to the number of variables that are multiplied together in a term:

In x3 [=(x)(x)(x)], the degree is 3.

In x2y4, the degree is 6.

in xy (=x1y1) the degree is 2.

In wxy6z2 the degree is 10.

In 1 (=x0) the degree is 0.
