Density has to have units e.g. g/cm3 tonnes/m3 lbs/cu ft.

Specific gravity (s.g.) is a way of avoiding the units problem. It expresses density relative to the density of water. Water has a s.g. of one.

An object with an s.g.<1 will float in water.
