x^(8) / x^(-3) =>

x^(8 * x^(--3) =>

x^(8) * x^(3) =>

x ^(8 + 3) =?

x^(11)

Remember the rules for indices.

The coefficient, 'x' in this case must be the same. For different coefficients the rules do NOT apply.

For Multiplication ; Add the indices.

e.g. x^(n) X x^(m) = x^(n+m)

For Division ; Subtract the indices.

e.g. x^(n) / x^(m) = x^(n - m)

For 'nesting of indices' ; multply the indices.

e.g. (x ^(n)^(m)) = x^(nm)

e.g. 2^(4) X 2^( 7) = 2^(11)

2^(4) / 2^(7) = 2^(-3)

(2^(4))^(7)) = 2^(4 x 7) = 2^(28)

Another subtlty is to remember that when removing an index above or below the division line, then change the sign .

e.g. 1/2^(3) = 2^(-3) ; Note the '1 over; has been removed.

Or 2^(4) = 1/2^(-4)

Hope that helps!!!!!
