There are no two real numbers that multiply to equal [positive] 50 and add to 2; however, the two complex numbers (1 + 7i) and (1 - 7i) will.

If there is a minus missing from in front of the 50, then the two numbers:

  • 1 + √51 ≈ 8.141; and
  • 1 - √51 ≈ -6.141

multiply to -50 and sum to [plus] 2.

If there is a minus sign missing from in front of the 50 and in front of the 2, then the two numbers:

  • -1 + √51 ≈ 6.141; and
  • -1 - √51 ≈ -8.141

multiply to -50 and sum to -2.
