Time = distance/speed

time_to_NYC = 300 mi / 60 mph = 5 hours

time_from_NYC = 300 mi / 40 mph = 7.5 hours

Total distance = 300 mi + 300 mi = 600 mi

Total time = 5 hr + 7.5 hr = 12.5 hr

→ total average speed = 600 mi / 12.5 hr = 48 mph

The total time to NYC is 300/60 = 5 hours and on way back 300/40 = 7.5 hours so total time is 12.5 hours round trip. 600/12.5 = 48 mph average speed. Note it is not 50 mph as one might guess.
