A number is prime when it only has one and itself as factors is prime. Therefore, to tell if a number is prime simply find it's factors. If it has more than two factors than it is not a prime number.

A number is prime when it is divisible by only 1 and itself. 5 is prime because it is not divisible by any numbers other than 1 and itself (5). But, 4 isn't prime because it is not only divisible by 1 and itself (4), it is also divisible by 2.
