Because by 'adding' a negative number to another negative number, you are making the first number even smaller - or more negative

A negative number means to take away. Think about in terms of money. If I owe you five dollars, then I have negative five dollars (-5). If I borrow ten more, then I owe you additional (+) ten dollars (-10). You would then add them together to figure out how much is owed. Five dollars plus ten dollars is fifteen dollars (-5 + -10 = -15).

Or you can think about it this way: two negative numbers added are always negative for the same reasons as when you add positive numbers, their sum is always positive. You get further away from zero, just in opposite directions.</P>

How can you decide if the sum of two numbers is positive negative or zero without actually calculating the sum?

The sum of two positive numbers is always positive, and the sum of two negatives is always negative. If you have a positive and a negative number, there sum can be either, so look at the absolute values to decide. For example -3+2=-1. Since all you care about is the sign, look at the absolute value. If the negative number has a greater absolute value, the sum is negative and if the positive number's absolute value, which is the number itself, is bigger, the sum is positive. If the absolute values are equal, the sum is 0.

When adding two negative rational numbers the sum will be negative sometimes never always?
