Historically, gender was seen as a discrete entity. A person was either clearly male or clearly female. However, modern studies of gender identity have revealed that while the majority of the population is discretely male or female, a significant minority of the population exists on a continuum between those two genders. These individuals are typically termed genderqueer if their gender non-conformity is mental and emotional or intersexual if their gender non-conformity is the physical shape of their reproductive organs. With this new knowledge, gender is a continuous thing.
